Behind-the-fence generation.
When the grid cannot connect you on your timeline, the only remaining variable is how fast you can build your own supply.
Where this usually goes wrong
Large-load connection queues in Alberta and ERCOT are longer than most project schedules and, in Alberta's case, capped. Developers holding signed tenants cannot wait for an allocation that may not come, and the self-supply route they turn to is usually sized against nameplate load rather than the actual profile.
How we scope it
We size the plant to your load profile and specify the generation against it, then source and verify the machine. The refurbishment scope, the balance of plant and the integration are written as specifications and performed by the contractors engaged for the project. Where a non-exporting configuration changes your regulatory position, that is scoped with counsel before you commit.
Performed by a named contractor
Load sizing, sourcing, verification and the procurement sequence are performed by PowerGen. Civil, electrical, integration and commissioning are performed by the contractors engaged for the project, each named in the transaction file before you commit.
What we require before we recommend a contractor
A promise is worth what the specification behind it is worth. These are the positions we will not sign without.
- Prior work on a non-exporting configuration at comparable capacity, not a grid-tied analogue.
- A single schedule covering the machine and the long-lead balance of plant, sequenced rather than listed.
- An emissions basis tested against the local permit path before signature, not after.
- Redundancy stated as a configuration, with the failure case written down.
- Acceptance criteria and test reports released to the owner, not summarised.
| Configuration | Non-exporting, behind the meter |
|---|---|
| Technology | Aeroderivative or reciprocating, selected on duty cycle |
| Fuel | Pipeline gas, dual fuel where backup is required |
| Redundancy | N+1 typical for continuous industrial load |
| Emissions basis | Scoped against the local permit path before commitment |
| Schedule driver | Verification, then long-lead balance of plant |
Typical positions, not a specification. Every project is scoped against its own duty cycle, permit path and site.
Tell us the megawatts and the date.
Those two numbers are usually enough for us to tell you whether we have a path.
